“Save The JFK” Maritime Museum Effort Launched

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA:  The JFK CV-67 Memorial Foundation, Inc. (the “Foundation”) announced today the launch of a nationwide campaign to “Save The JFK” air craft carrier as a museum.  Originally commissioned in 1968, the Navy retired the carrier on March 23rd, 2007 at a formal ceremony in Mayport, Florida.

The Foundation has identified two ideal locations in south Florida for berthing the vessel:  the “FEC Slip” in Miami’s planned “Museum Park,” or adjacent to the Broward County Convention Center at Port Everglades, just 25 miles to the north in Fort Lauderdale.  Both locations feature deep-water access, temperate year-round weather, and, most importantly, thriving tourist bases to support the ship as a museum and attraction in perpetuity.  The Foundation’s proposal at either location would include a permanent dry-dock facility within which the ship would be welded in-place to mitigate against potential storm surge damage and ease future maintenance requirements.

The Foundation’s plans call for retrofitting the ship as the “John F. Kennedy Maritime Museum” honoring the legacy of the ship, the sailors and aviators who served aboard her, and her name-sake, the most revered President in recent history.  The vessel will also serve as an educational platform for children’s groups and as a unique venue for large events ranging from corporate functions, parties, and full banquets for thousands of people, whether on the flight deck or in the hangar deck below.

Further information about the Foundation and its plans, choice of locations, fundraising and sponsorship opportunities, and other background information appears at its website, www.SaveTheJFK.com .  The website allows people around the country to participate in the campaign to “Save The JFK” and includes “roll calls” to help former shipmates reconnect, message boards, historical information, a photo gallery and much more.

The JFK CV-67 Memorial Foundation, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation.
