The USS Midway Example
The Foundation’s plans for the USS John F. Kennedy not coincidentally rely on the experience of a sister ship, the USS Midway, a primary new feature of the San Diego, California waterfront. The Foundation has received priceless support, and benefited from the invaluable experience of those who made the “Midway Magic” dream a reality.
The “Gold Standard” in aircraft carrier museum operations and educational programs has been set by the USS Midway. Operating as “The San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum” (SDACM), in the heart of San Diego's historic waterfront, the USS Midway has proven its metal, as visitation and revenues generated by its 900,000-plus annual visitors have surpassed all prior estimates.

JFK CV-67 Memorial Foundation President, Paul Troxell, was welcomed aboard the San Diego Aircraft Carrier Museum by its President, Mac McLaughlin for an intensive four-day fact-finding mission.
This visit served as the basis for the resulting endorsement of Mr. Troxell’s vision by the management and Board Of Directors of the Midway - to save the recently decommissioned USS John F. Kennedy aircraft carrier as an attraction along the downtown waterfront in the City of Miami.

With a volunteer and docent force exceeding 300 people, the SDACM offers educational outreach to more than 25,000 elementary students annually. Since it opened in 2004 the Midway has welcomed aboard over 2.5 million visitors and hosted events for up to 4,000 people, nearly 200 evenings a year. With annual gross revenues of $14 million, it dedicates $3 million each year to preservation and additional restoration. The museum lists among key partners the U.S. Navy, Unified Port of San Diego and the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau.
